Cape Coral

Scenic view of Canal in Cape CoralIn the 1950's, Cape Coral, Florida was mostly a sandy peninsula, dotted with scrub and well known by hunters and fishermen who traveled the single road dirt road in search of adventure.

By the early 1960's the Rosen brothers had begun the task of laying out the design and digging out the over 400 miles of canals that now wind through 114 miles of city. Even these early developers may not have envisioned the city as it appears today.

It used to seem that most business locations were on the Fort Myers side of the river and with the exception of a few stores, a trip across the Cape Coral Bridge was necessary to find restaurants, retail shopping centers and services.

The opening of the Midpoint Bridge and the completion of Veteran's Highway, has changed the business landscape. Fort Myers is now an easy commute from most areas of Cape Coral and businesses are beginning to realize the potential that the Cape offers as one of the fastest growing areas in Florida.

Publix Grocery Store at the Midpoint CenterThe first phase of the Midpoint Shopping Center opened in 2003 with a large Publix grocery store and Cape Coral's first Target followed by a Ruby Tuesdays restaurant. Each month brings more businesses to the city and in 2006 Home Depot opened in the SW section. Shopping centers have been springing up on Pine Island Road, which is quickly becoming a hot area for businesses. Plans to revitalize the original downtown area are beginning to take place and are visible in the redesigned storefronts and backstreets. The Hampton Inn opened in 2006 providing more lodging and meeting facilities.

Quality of life in Cape Coral has improved steadily yet the crime rate remains extremely low. In the early years of the city, the lifestyle was geared toward retirement and associated activities and services. With the median age becoming significantly lower, the services and activities reflect the change.
