Early morning at the Cape Coral Yacht Club seems peaceful enough on this perfect July day in 2004.  Fishermen make their way along the pier and boats drift lazily by on the Caloosahatchee River.  At first the beach seems deserted with just a few waders but suddenly men with mallets and yellow police tape begin to appear and pound in the stakes that mark off the "boat docks" for the annual Cardboard Boat Races.

Captains bark out orders to their crew as the colorful chunks of cardboard, glue and paint are placed on the platforms ready for the first round of judging.

While strolling along the row of possibly seaworthy craft, the voice of Dave Roberts, Fox TV begins to describe the scene using words like "whimsical" and "crafty". The teams have spent hours preparing their boats and working on nautical outfits to match their theme. The Paradise Pirates have outdone themselves this year with this authentic replica of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and there is much speculation about whether it will float.
The Power Squadron goes all out with their "Popeye II" complete with Spinach and Olive Oyl. It may seem intimidating to be grouped in with so many creative and talented boat builders but this is an event that is all about fun so even the Caloosa Dive Club's "Boat With No Name" boat in a plain brown wrapper is a contender for some of the many prizes to be awarded.
Mayor Arnold Kempe, the City of Cape Coral is one of the judging team this year and the National Anthem is presented by our very own City Manager, Terry Stewart.

Sharon Harrington, the Lee County Supervisor of Elections, has made Touch-Screen Voting Machines available so that enthusiasts can vote for the People's Choice Award for a favorite boat and she spends lots of time explaining the operation of the machines that are used for elections here in Florida.
