Southwest Florida celebrates the holidays
in style. Under warm, sunny, Cape Coral skies the Christmas
Boat Parade is one of the best events of the year. As early as
noon, chairs and picnic blankets begin to appear in Four
Freedoms Park along Cape Coral Parkway. Homes along the canal
parade route are spruced up with Christmas Lights and
party-goers begin to arrive. Music, food and other
entertainment keep everyone busy as they wait for the
festivities to begin. Boats begin to arrive in the Bimini
Basin and slowly cruise to locate a good place to wait for the
parade start. The sky begins it's slow turn from light
blue, to flamingo pink and Christmas Red as the sun sets.
Shimmering displays of light begin to appear and the Bimini
Basin looks like Rockefeller Center on Christmas Eve. The
starting gun booms the start of the parade and over 100 boats
with captain and crew slowly fall in line behind the blinking,
blue lights of the Marine Patrol Guide. |

Large and small, power and sail,
each craft is uniquely garbed in the brightest Christmas
Cheer. Santas of every shape and size appear from bow to
stern. Christmas trees complete with blinking lights and
crowning stars cast a glow on the water.
Reindeer and dolphins share the
spotlight along the rails and masts and sounds of "Ho Ho Ho"
and choruses of Christmas caroling boaters compete with the
music from the shore. |

Canal banks are lined with people who wave, call out
Christmas Greetings and applaud for their favorite decorations
drifting by. Boats anchored along the parade route or moored
at their own docks add to the excitement with their
decorations and light displays. As the parade moves along the
shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River, the lights are visible
out to the river channels and as far as the distant shore.
The Cape Coral version of a Christmas Winter Wonderland
happens on the water at the Christmas Boat Parade. After the
parade and when the evening skies reflect only the distant
planets, it becomes the perfect start to a tour through the
city to view the fabulous display put on by the residents of
Cape Coral.
